The Caterpillar's Surprise
🔊 Read to me Opens Story Time: the words light up as the story is read aloud.
Daisy the kitten found a fuzzy green caterpillar munching on a leaf. "Hello," she said. "You're very hungry." "I am," said the caterpillar, between bites. "I have something big to do."
Every day, Daisy visited the caterpillar. It ate and ate and grew and grew. "What's the big thing?" Daisy asked. "You'll see," said the caterpillar with a wink.
One day, the caterpillar wasn't on its leaf. Instead, Daisy found a little brown case, hanging from a twig. "It's called a chrysalis," said her mother. "The caterpillar is inside, changing."
Daisy waited. And waited. She checked every morning. The wind rocked the twig, the rain pattered on the leaves, but the chrysalis stayed quiet and still.
Then one sunny morning, the chrysalis began to wiggle. A crack appeared. Out came a crumpled, damp wing, then another. Daisy held her breath.
The wings slowly opened. They were orange and black, with white spots like tiny stars. It was a butterfly!
"It's me!" said the butterfly. "Remember the hungry caterpillar?" Daisy's mouth fell open. "You changed into something completely different!"
The butterfly fluttered up into the sunshine, did a little loop around Daisy's ears and landed on a flower. "Thank you for waiting with me," it said. Daisy purred. Waiting had been hard, but it had been worth it.
