The Kitten Who Couldn't Purr

All the kittens in Willow Basket could purr, except one. Her name was Fig. When she was happy, she tried and tried, but nothing came out. Not even a tiny rumble.
"Maybe I'm broken," she said sadly to her friend Pumpkin. "Of course you're not," said Pumpkin. "Let's figure it out together."
First, they asked the old tabby cat on the wall. "Purring comes from deep inside," said the tabby. "Think of something lovely." Fig thought of warm milk. Nothing.
Next, they asked the wind. The wind just whistled and blew their whiskers sideways, which was funny, but didn't help.
Then they asked the bees in the garden. "Bzzzz," said the bees. "Try buzzing first." Fig tried. "Bzzz..." It tickled her nose, and she sneezed.
That evening, Fig and Pumpkin lay in the long grass and watched the sunset. Pumpkin told her a silly joke about a fish who wore socks. Fig laughed. Then Pumpkin snuggled against her, warm and soft, and said, "You're my best friend, Fig."
And deep inside Fig, something began to rumble. A soft, warm, happy rumble that started in her tummy and grew and grew. "Purrrrr..."
"You're purring!" shouted Pumpkin. Fig's eyes went wide. "I am!" she said, and she purred even louder. It turned out that Fig's purr had just been waiting for the right moment, and the right friend.
