Patch Learns Left and Right

Patch was a white kitten with one black patch over her left eye. She was clever and kind, but she always mixed up her left and her right.
"Turn left at the big tree," said her friend Rocky, when they went to the pond. Patch turned right and ended up in a hedge. "Oops," she said, picking leaves out of her ears.
"I have an idea," said Rocky. "Your patch is over your left eye. So whenever you need to go left, just think: which side is my patch on?"
Patch closed her right eye. She could still see. Then she closed her left eye, the one with the patch. "My patch side is my left side!" she said. "Exactly!" said Rocky.
They practiced. "Lift your left paw," said Rocky. Patch thought about her patch and lifted her left paw. "Now your right paw." She lifted the other one. "Now both!" Patch fell over, laughing. That was too many paws.
They played a game. Rocky called out, "Left!" and Patch jumped left. "Right!" and she jumped right. "Left, left, right!" Hop, hop, hop! She didn't make a single mistake.
On the way home, they came to the big tree. "Which way?" asked Rocky with a grin. Patch thought about her patch. "Left!" she said, and turned the right way, which was left.
They arrived at the pond, where the ducks were splashing. "I did it," said Patch proudly, and gave a big happy meow. And from that day on, she never got lost again, thanks to her very own left-side patch.
