Grandma Nell knitted a pair of tiny silver mittens for Lulu the kitten. "These are moonlight mittens," she said. "Wear them on a full moon night, and you'll see."

On the next full moon, Lulu pulled on the mittens. They fit her front paws perfectly. She stepped outside onto the lawn, and suddenly, her paws didn't touch the ground. She was floating!

"Whoa!" Lulu wobbled in the air, then laughed. With every step, she rose a little higher, as if she were walking up invisible stairs. Up past the fence. Up past the apple tree. Up past the chimney.

A sleepy pigeon on the roof blinked at her. "Well, that's not something you see every night," it cooed.

Lulu walked across the sky, from star to star. Each star chimed like a tiny bell when she touched it with her silver mitten. She played a little tune: ting, ting, tong, ting.

She found the moon, big and round and close enough to touch. It was smooth and cool, like a pebble from the river. "Hello, Moon," said Lulu. The moon seemed to smile.

Lulu sat on a soft cloud and looked down at her house, with Grandma's window glowing yellow. She felt a little sleepy and a little homesick. So she walked back down the invisible stairs, step by step, all the way home.

Grandma was waiting with a warm blanket. "Did you see?" she asked. Lulu purred and nodded. Then she fell asleep with her silver mittens still on, dreaming of the sky.
