On a rainy Tuesday, Hazel the kitten found an old umbrella in the hallway closet. It was red with white polka dots, and the handle was carved like a cat's head with tiny green eyes.

She took it out into the rain and opened it. The moment it popped open, the carved cat's eyes blinked, and the umbrella began to tug upward. "Hold on tight!" it said in a cheerful voice.

Hazel held on, and whoosh! Up she went, above the garden, above the rooftops, above the grey rain clouds. And there, above the clouds, the sun was shining!

"Every rainy day has a sunny side," said the umbrella. "You just have to go high enough to see it." Hazel gazed at the fluffy cloud tops, glowing gold and white like a giant field of cotton.

They floated over the town. Hazel saw people below with their umbrellas, like colorful little mushrooms on the streets. She saw her school, the park and the river, all shining with rain.

A flock of geese flew beside them, honking a friendly hello. A rainbow appeared at the edge of a cloud, and the umbrella flew right through it. Hazel's fur sparkled with all the colors for a moment.

"Time to go home," said the umbrella, as the rain began to stop below. They drifted gently down, through the clouds, and landed softly on the doorstep.

Hazel shook the drops off her fur and closed the umbrella. The carved cat winked one green eye and went still. From that day on, Hazel never minded rainy days. She knew the sun was always shining somewhere above.
