At the bottom of the garden stood a mighty oak tree. It was so old and so tall that its branches seemed to touch the clouds. Cinnamon the cat loved to nap in its shade.

One autumn day, an acorn fell from a high branch and bounced right off Cinnamon's head. Bonk! "Ouch," she said, rubbing her ear. Then she looked at the little acorn. It had a tiny hat, like a cap.

"Did you know," rustled the oak tree, in a deep, slow voice that sounded like the wind, "that I was once an acorn just like that one?"

Cinnamon's eyes went round. "You were that small?" "Smaller," said the oak. "A squirrel buried me a long, long time ago and forgot where I was. Then the rain came, and the sun, and I began to grow."

"How long did it take you to get so big?" asked Cinnamon. "Oh, about a hundred years," said the oak. "Trees are very patient."

Just then, a squirrel scampered down the trunk, grabbed the acorn and dashed off to bury it in the flowerbed. "Maybe that one will grow into a tree too," said Cinnamon.

"Maybe," said the oak. "And in a hundred years, another cat might nap in its shade." Cinnamon liked that idea very much.

She curled up between the oak's great roots, which were shaped like a cozy armchair. The birds sang in the branches above, and the old tree hummed a slow, leafy lullaby until Cinnamon fell asleep.
