Clover and the Busy Bees

Clover the kitten loved the lavender bush in the garden. It smelled sweet, and it was full of tiny buzzing visitors.
"What are you doing?" she asked a fuzzy bee. "Collecting nectar," buzzed the bee. "We turn it into honey. And when we visit flowers, we carry pollen from one to the next, so they can make seeds."
"Can I help?" asked Clover. The bee laughed a buzzy laugh. "You're a bit big for a flower. But you can help another way. Just let us work, and don't pat at us."
So Clover sat very still and watched. The bees went from flower to flower. Each one had little yellow bundles of pollen on its legs, like tiny shopping bags.
The wind blew gently and the lavender waved. The birds sang in the hedge. Clover's whiskers twitched as a bee landed right on her nose, said "Excuse me," and flew away again.
Clover giggled so much that she rolled over in the grass. When she sat up, the bees were still buzzing happily, and the garden looked brighter than ever.
That evening, Clover's family had toast with honey. Clover sniffed it and purred. "Thank you, bees," she whispered toward the window.
