The Mushroom Umbrella

Fern the kitten was exploring the woods when big grey clouds rolled in. Plip. Plop. Drip. The rain began to fall.
"Oh no," said Fern, looking around. She was too far from home to run back. Then she saw it: a big, round mushroom, with a wide brown cap, growing at the foot of an old tree. She crawled underneath. It was just big enough.
"Excuse me," said a tiny voice. "Is there room for one more?" It was a ladybug, her red wings dripping. "Of course," said Fern, and shuffled over.
Then came a snail, sliding slowly. "Lovely weather," he said, "for snails." Then a beetle, a little brown mouse and two wet bumblebees, buzzing softly. Soon the space under the mushroom was quite full.
They all huddled together, listening to the rain patter on the mushroom cap like a drum. "This is cozy," said the mouse. "It's like a tiny house," said the ladybug.
To pass the time, they told stories. The snail told the slowest story ever, about a race. The bees told a story about a flower as big as a house. Fern told them about her favorite sunny windowsill. Everyone laughed and listened.
After a while, the rain stopped. The sun came out, and the drops on the leaves sparkled like tiny jewels. One by one, the visitors came out and said thank you to the mushroom.
Fern walked home, her paws only a little bit wet. "I made six new friends today," she told her mother, "all under one umbrella." Then she curled up by the window, purring, to watch for more rain.
