When the sun went down, Lavender the cat took her evening walk around the garden, saying goodnight to everyone who lived there.

"Night-night, sunflowers," she said. The tall sunflowers had bowed their big heads, as if they were nodding off. "Night-night, daisies." The daisies had closed their white petals tight, like little fists.

"Night-night, bees," she whispered at the beehive. A soft hum came from inside, quieter than in the daytime. The bees were resting, dreaming of flowers.

"Night-night, birds." In the hedge, a robin sang one last little song before tucking its head under its wing. Lavender waited until the song was finished. It seemed polite.

"Night-night, worms," she said to the soft soil. "Night-night, snails," she said to the shiny trails on the path. "Night-night, little spider." The spider was fixing her web, which glittered in the moonlight.

Then Lavender saw that some of the garden was just waking up. Moths fluttered around the lamp. A hedgehog snuffled under the bushes. And the night flowers, white and sweet-smelling, were opening their petals to the moon. "Good evening, night garden," said Lavender.

The breeze rustled the leaves like a lullaby. The stars came out one by one. Lavender walked back to her house, padded up the steps and curled up on the soft mat by the door.

"Night-night, garden," she yawned. And the whole garden, in its own quiet way, whispered back, "Night-night, Lavender."
