When the rain began to tap on the window, Biscuit decided it was the perfect evening to build a blanket fort.

She dragged a soft blanket off the sofa. She pushed two cushions together for walls. She pulled a pillow inside for a bed. Then she crawled in and looked around. It was cozy and dim and smelled like warm laundry.

"Every fort needs a guard," said Biscuit, so she invited Teddy, her old toy bear with one button eye. Teddy sat by the door, looking very serious.

"Every fort needs a snack," said Biscuit, so she brought in one crunchy treat and ate it in three tiny bites.

"Every fort needs a light," said Biscuit. Just then, the little nightlight in the hallway clicked on, shining a soft orange glow through the blanket. It looked like a sunset inside.

Outside, the rain kept going pitter-patter. A low rumble of thunder rolled far, far away, like a giant cat purring in the clouds. Biscuit did not mind at all. Inside her fort, everything was safe and snug.

She kneaded the pillow with her paws, around and around, until it was just right. Then she curled up next to Teddy and let out a long, happy yawn.

When her family peeked in later, they found a little fort with a sleeping cat inside and a teddy bear keeping watch, just like he promised.
