Cola's Lullaby

One night, a summer storm rolled over the town. The rain drummed on the roof, and a low rumble of thunder grumbled far away.
Fuzz couldn't sleep. His big sideways ears kept twitching at every sound. He tiptoed to Cola's basket. "Cola," he whispered, "are you awake?"
Cola opened her blue eyes. "I am now," she said kindly. "What's wrong?" "The storm is so noisy," said Fuzz. "My ears won't stop listening."
Cola shuffled over to make room. "When I was a kitten," she said, "my mother sang me a lullaby on stormy nights. Shall I sing it to you?" Fuzz nodded, his tongue peeking out.
So Cola sang, very softly: "Rain is just the sky's soft song, thunder hums the whole night long. Close your eyes and you will see, you are safe here next to me."
Fuzz curled up beside her. The rain kept pattering, but now it sounded like a gentle drum keeping time with the song. The thunder rumbled again, but now it sounded like a big, sleepy cat purring in the clouds.
"Sing it again," murmured Fuzz. Cola sang it again, slower this time, and her eyelashes fluttered sleepily. Fuzz's ears stopped twitching. His breathing grew slow and deep.
By the third time, they were both fast asleep, a stripy cat and a Siamese cat, curled up together. Outside, the storm rolled away, and the moon came out to say goodnight. Fuzz gave a tiny dreamy purr.
