Everybody knows that when you can't sleep, you count sheep. But what does a sheep count when it can't sleep?

Woolly the sheep lay in her field under the stars, wide awake. She had tried counting other sheep, but they were all asleep, snoring softly, and it just wasn't working.

Then she had an idea. She closed her eyes and imagined a little fence. And over the fence jumped a cat. A fluffy orange cat with a curly tail. "One," whispered Woolly.

Then came a black cat with white socks, leaping gracefully. "Two." Then a tiny grey kitten, who didn't quite make it over the fence and had to climb. "Three," said Woolly, smiling.

A stripy cat jumped over with a little jingle, because he had a bell on his collar. "Four." A fluffy white cat floated over like a cloud. "Five."

The cats kept coming, each one slower and sleepier than the last. Cat number twelve stopped halfway, sat on the fence and washed its paw. Cat number thirteen lay down in the grass and closed its eyes.

"Fourteen..." mumbled Woolly. "Fifteen..." The night breeze rustled the grass. The stars blinked slowly, like sleepy eyes.

"Six...teen..." said Woolly, and that was all. She was fast asleep, dreaming of a meadow full of cats, all curled up and purring, under a big round moon.
