Grandma's Patchwork Quilt

Grandma Tabitha had made a patchwork quilt for Nutmeg the kitten. Every square was a different color, and every square had a story.
"This yellow square," said Grandma, as she tucked Nutmeg in, "was from the sunny dress I wore at the summer fair, when I won a prize for the fluffiest tail." Nutmeg giggled.
"This green square came from your grandpa's old scarf. He wore it every winter, when we walked through the snowy woods and listened to the wind in the trees."
"And this blue square, with the little white stars on it," said Grandma, "came from the blanket you were wrapped in when you were a tiny new kitten, no bigger than a teacup."
Nutmeg touched the blue square gently with her paw. "I was that small?" "Smaller," said Grandma. "You fit in the palm of a hand, and you purred like a tiny bee."
Nutmeg looked at all the squares. Red, orange, purple, pink. "So the quilt is like a hug made of memories," she said.
"Exactly," said Grandma. "Whenever you sleep under it, all the happy days are keeping you warm."
Nutmeg snuggled down until only her ears poked out. Grandma kissed her on the head and turned off the light. Under the quilt, Nutmeg felt warm and loved, and very, very sleepy. She gave a little yawn and drifted off, dreaming of summer fairs and snowy woods.
