The Quiet Song of the Sea

In a little blue house by the sea lived a kitten named Shell. Every night, she sat in the round window of her bedroom and listened to the waves.
Shhh, went the waves as they came in. Shhh, they went as they slid back out. Shell thought they sounded like the sea was telling everyone to be quiet and go to sleep.
"Grandpa," she asked, "does the sea ever go to sleep?" Grandpa, an old cat with a grey beard, smiled. "The sea is like a big blue cat," he said. "It breathes in and out, all night long, so we can rest."
Shell listened again. Shhh, splash, shhh. In and out. In and out. She tried breathing the same way. In, as the wave came in. Out, as it rolled away.
A seagull gave one last sleepy call and tucked its head under its wing. The lighthouse on the rocks blinked its gentle light. The moon made a silver path across the water, all the way to Shell's window.
"I think the moon is making a road for my dreams," Shell whispered. Grandpa tucked a blanket around her. "Then you'd better follow it," he said softly.
Shell breathed in with the waves and out with the waves. Her eyes grew heavy. Her whiskers relaxed. She gave a tiny yawn.
And as she fell asleep, she dreamed she was walking along the silver moon road, over the gentle sea, with the waves singing their quiet song all around her. Shhh. Shhh. Shhh.
