One Ball of Yarn

Grandma Rose had knitted a beautiful ball of yarn. It was bright red and perfectly round, and she gave it to the twin kittens, Salt and Pepper.
"It's mine!" said Salt, grabbing it. "No, it's mine!" said Pepper, grabbing it back. They pulled, and pulled, and pulled. The yarn began to unroll.
Salt ran to the left. Pepper ran to the right. The yarn went around the chair, under the table and over the sofa. Soon the whole living room looked like a giant red spider web, and both kittens were tangled in the middle.
"Help!" squeaked Salt, with yarn around her tail. "Help!" squeaked Pepper, with yarn around his ears. They couldn't move at all.
Grandma Rose came in and laughed a kind laugh. "Oh, my dears," she said. "Pulling in two directions never gets anyone anywhere." She gently untangled them, one paw at a time.
Then she rolled the yarn back into a ball and showed them a new game. "Salt, you roll it to Pepper. Pepper, you roll it back to Salt." Roll. Catch. Roll. Catch. The ball zipped back and forth across the floor.
"This is more fun than pulling!" said Pepper. "Because we're playing together!" said Salt. They played until they were both out of breath, and their happy meows filled the house.
That night, the twins fell asleep curled up around the ball of yarn, one on each side, with a shared yawn.
