Mirza and the Desert Caravan

Long ago, on the great road where traders traveled with silks and spices, there was a caravan of camels. And riding on the very first camel, in a little basket, was a cat named Mirza.
Mirza had soft sandy fur and bright green eyes. Her job was to keep the bags of grain safe from mice, and to keep the camel driver, old Kamol, company on the long journey.
The caravan crossed golden sand dunes that rose and fell like waves. The camels walked slowly, their bells going clong, clong with every step. The wind sent ripples of sand across the dunes like a drawing.
In the evening, the caravan stopped at an oasis, a green place in the desert with a pool of cool water and tall palm trees. Mirza drank the water and rested in the shade, listening to the travelers' stories.
That night, Kamol pointed at the sky. It was full of more stars than Mirza had ever seen. "We follow the stars to find our way," he said. "That bright one tells us which way is north."
After many days, they saw towers on the horizon: tall domes of blue and turquoise tiles, shining in the sun. "The city!" cried Kamol. The market was full of colorful carpets, sweet melons and the smell of fresh round bread.
A little boy in the market saw Mirza and smiled. Mirza jumped down and rubbed against his legs with a friendly meow. The boy gave her a tiny piece of bread, and she purred her thanks.
When the caravan set off again, Mirza rode in her basket at the front, looking out at the endless road ahead. She didn't know where they would go next, but she knew it would be an adventure.
