"How many sleeps until my birthday?" asked Fuzz. It was a Monday, and his birthday was on Sunday, the third of October. Cola's birthday was the very next day.
"Let's learn the days of the week," said Cola, "and then we can count them." She lined up seven of Fuzz's toy mice in a row.
"This is Monday," she said, tapping the first mouse. "Monday is today. Then comes Tuesday." She tapped the second mouse. "Then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday." Tap, tap, tap. Fuzz's tongue poked out as he concentrated.
"Then the weekend," said Cola. "Saturday and Sunday." She tapped the last two mice. "And Sunday is your birthday!"
Fuzz counted the mice. "One, two, three, four, five, six sleeps! Then it's my birthday!" He jumped so high that his bell went jingle.
Every night that week, before bed, Fuzz pushed one toy mouse into his basket. "Bye, Monday," he said with a yawn. "Bye, Tuesday." By Saturday, only one mouse was left in the row.
On Sunday morning, Fuzz woke up and the row was empty. "It's Sunday! It's my birthday!" he cheered. Cola popped up with a present. "And how many sleeps until mine?" she asked. Fuzz grinned. "Just one!"
They both laughed, and Cola purred all day, because counting down with a friend makes waiting fun.
