Doodle's Dance Lesson

Doodle the cat wanted to be a dancer. She had seen the ballerinas on TV, spinning on their toes, and she thought, "I can do that."
She found a scarf to use as a tutu and a big open space in the living room. "First position," she said, like a real dance teacher. She put her four paws together. Then she realized that dancers only have two feet on the ground. She tried standing on her back legs. Wobble, wobble, flop.
"Let's try twirling," said Doodle. She spun around once. Then twice. Then three times. On the fourth spin, she got so dizzy that she twirled right into the curtains and got tangled up like a cat burrito.
Her friend Ruff the dog came in. "What are you doing?" "Dancing," said Doodle from inside the curtain. Ruff helped her out. "Maybe," he said kindly, "you don't have to dance like a ballerina. Maybe you could dance like a cat."
Doodle thought about it. What do cats do? They pounce. They stretch. They swish their tails. They leap onto things. So she put on some music and tried.
She stretched her front paws out long. She swished her tail left and right in time with the music. She did a little pounce, then a big leap onto the sofa, then a slow, graceful slide back down. Then she rolled over and waved all four paws in the air.
Ruff clapped his paws. "That was amazing!" he barked. Even the goldfish blew a bubble of applause. Doodle took a bow and gave a happy meow.
From that day on, Doodle danced every afternoon. Not like a ballerina, but like the one and only Doodle. She called it the Cat Shuffle, and it was the best dance in the house.
