There was one sunbeam in the living room, and every afternoon Toffee had it all to herself. It was warm and golden and exactly cat-sized.

But one afternoon, someone was already lying in it. It was Rolo, the new kitten, stretched out with his eyes closed, purring away.

"That's my sunbeam," said Toffee, with a swish of her tail. Rolo opened one eye. "Oh," he said in a small voice. "I'm sorry. I didn't know sunbeams belonged to anyone."

He got up and went to sit in the shady corner, all alone. Toffee lay down in her sunbeam. It was warm. It was golden. But somehow, it didn't feel as nice as usual.

She peeked at Rolo. He looked a little chilly and a little lonely. Toffee sighed. Then she shuffled over to one side of the sunbeam. "There's room for two," she said.

Rolo trotted over and curled up next to her. The sunbeam was a bit squished, but it was twice as cozy. Toffee realized that sharing a warm spot also meant sharing warm fur.

As the afternoon went on, the sunbeam slowly moved across the floor. So did the two cats, inch by inch, following it together like a pair of furry snails.

By evening they were good friends, and Toffee had learned something new. A sunbeam is nice. A sunbeam with a friend is even nicer. Toffee gave a sleepy yawn, and so did Rolo.
