A moving van rumbled up to the house next door, and out of a basket popped a tiny grey kitten with one white sock.

Whiskers watched from her fence. "Hello!" she called. The kitten jumped and hid behind a flowerpot. Only her ears poked out.

"She's shy," thought Whiskers. "I'll be gentle." So the next day, Whiskers left a present by the fence: a crinkly ball made of silver paper.

The kitten crept out, sniffed it, and gave it a little tap. Crinkle! She jumped, then tapped it again. Soon she was chasing it all over the lawn.

The next day, Whiskers sat on the fence and sang a little song. "Meow, meow, the sun is out, come and see what play's about!" The kitten giggled behind the flowerpot.

On the third day, the kitten climbed up onto the fence too. She sat a little way from Whiskers. "My name is Button," she said quietly. "I didn't know anyone here."

"Now you know me," said Whiskers. "Do you want to see the best place in the whole street to watch the birds?"

Button nodded so fast that her ears wiggled. Together they padded along the fence to the old apple tree, where the sparrows chattered and the sunshine came through the leaves like gold coins. From then on, every day was a fence-top adventure for two.
