The Wishing Whisker

One morning, Olive the cat found one of her own whiskers on her pillow. It was long and white, and it shimmered in the sunlight. "That's odd," she said. "It's glowing."
Her grandmother peered at it over her spectacles. "That's a wishing whisker," she said. "It happens once in nine lives. You get one wish. Choose carefully."
Olive thought and thought. Should she wish for a mountain of tuna? A castle made of cardboard boxes? A ball of yarn as big as a house?
She walked through the house, holding the whisker gently in her mouth. In the kitchen, she saw her friend Moss, the little mouse who lived behind the cupboard, looking very sad. "My nest got wet in the rain," he sniffed. "Now I have nowhere cozy to sleep."
Olive didn't think twice. She held up the whisker and said, "I wish Moss had the coziest nest in the whole world."
Sparkle! A shower of tiny silver lights swirled around the cupboard. When it cleared, there was a little nest made of the softest wool, with a thimble for a cup and a button for a plate.
Moss squeaked with joy and dived right in. "Thank you, Olive!" he cried. Olive purred, her heart feeling warm and full, warmer than any tuna could ever make it.
Grandmother smiled. "Some wishes are even better when they're for someone else," she said. And she was right.
