It was Grandpa Tom's birthday, and Kiki the kitten wanted to give him something special. She had a bright red balloon, tied with a long silver ribbon.

Kiki held the ribbon tightly in her mouth and walked toward Grandpa's house. But on the way, a gust of wind blew, and the ribbon slipped out. The balloon floated up, up, up!

"Come back!" cried Kiki, chasing it across the park. The balloon bobbed along, just out of reach. It floated past the duck pond, where a duck quacked in surprise and made a splash.

It floated past the bakery, where the baker looked up and smiled. It floated past the school, where the children pointed and waved. Kiki ran and ran, her paws pattering on the path.

Then the balloon got caught on a lamppost, just near Grandpa's house. Kiki was too small to reach it. She sat down, out of breath. Her eyes filled with tears. "Now I have no present," she sighed.

Just then, Grandpa Tom came out of his front gate. He saw the red balloon on the lamppost, waving in the breeze. Then he saw Kiki, sitting below. "Is that for me?" he asked gently.

Kiki nodded. "It was. But it flew away." Grandpa reached up with his long arm and untangled the ribbon. He tied it to Kiki's collar, so it floated above her like a little red cloud. "Now," he said, "it's a balloon AND a kitten. The best present ever."

They walked into the house together for birthday cake, with the red balloon bobbing above them. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday," and Kiki purred the loudest of all.
