The Pumpkin Patch Puzzle

In the pumpkin patch behind the farmhouse, Ginger the farm cat had a puzzle to solve. Every morning, one of the pumpkins had a tiny round hole in it.
"Who is nibbling the pumpkins?" wondered Ginger. She put on her best thinking face and began to investigate.
She sniffed the first pumpkin. It smelled of earth and seeds. Then she found tiny footprints in the mud, much smaller than her own paws. "Interesting," she said.
That night, Ginger hid behind a big orange pumpkin and waited. The moon came up. An owl hooted. Ginger's eyes began to close... when suddenly she heard a tiny crunch.
She peeked out. There, by the smallest pumpkin, was a family of field mice. The mother mouse was scooping out the seeds with a leaf spoon, and the little mice were carrying them away in acorn cups.
"Excuse me," said Ginger gently. The mice froze. "Please don't be cross," squeaked the mother. "Winter is coming, and pumpkin seeds keep us fed until spring."
Ginger thought about the long, cold winter. Then she smiled. "The farmer has more pumpkins than he needs," she said. "Let me help." Together they rolled the smallest pumpkin, the funny bumpy one, all the way to the mice's burrow.
On the night of the harvest party, the farmer's children carved a smiling face into the biggest pumpkin. And deep underground, a family of mice had a pumpkin pantry of their own. "Meow," said Ginger goodnight, and the mice squeaked their thank-yous.
